President's Spiel for April 2019

Welcome to our second quarter newsletter for 2019.

Where did the first quarter go? Cardiff with 95 starters in February and over 200 entries into the ACT Masters in March. Congratulations to the ACT committee for a record number for their 40th Anniversary. A memorable occasion as we passed through the “70’s” and Old Parliament House.
With our most recent tournament signifying our 24th tournament for Bathurst, well done Dave a stalwart of our game. It was also the 3rd Jason Davies Memorial Trophy. The recipient for 2019 was Tanya Bailey a deserved winner. Tanya played 7 out of 8 tournaments and 17 points. Only 1 player made it to all tournaments, that being Geoff Hunter who was runner up with 15 points. Sorry Geoff it must have been that loss to me that cost you!
Jason’s goddaughter niece Amelia and father Brett were not able to attend presentation as Amelia was representing Bathurst in Netball at Penrith but did write a note of apology to be read out about what this tournament meant to Jason and the family living in Bathurst, it touched many at presentation, sadly missed.
Unfortunately, we lost another icon of squash recently in Timmy Dann. His Memorial Service was held at his schoolboy Baptist Church in Morisset and attended by over 200 people. Many squashies and eulogies, in particular John Carroll who reflected on how Tim touched many people as friends.
Your Team has been working hard on our 40th Anniversary Celebrations and State Championships, June 22nd – 23rd. Once again, we have the “Early Bird” entry form saving you money, so take the advantage and enter before 17 May 2019. Sponsors player shirts to all entrants.
Celebrations begin with Friday afternoon bowls with the Friday night “get together” at the revamped Vicar Hotel Dural, with its new look restaurants and bars now open. Unfortunately, their motel accommodation is closed due to refurbishment with other accommodation listed on the entry form.
If you know any “old masters” players, please encourage them to come and play or just socialise with those friends they made in the past.
We are still accepting sponsors for shirt and website advertising, so if you know a company or person that would be willing to advertise, we would like to hear from them, please refer to our Secretary, myself or Bill Linton to follow up.
Gold Coast Australian Championships are approaching in September. Accommodation has been sourced at a discounted rate at “The Waves” Broadbeach. If you require accommodation or more information, please contact Monica Rigby of your requirements ASAP.
For all those planning to play the Teams week your EOI’s are required by 30th June, ideally at the State Championships. Any player must be a member of an affiliated Masters Association to enter.
The Biennial Trans-Tasman Test will be played in Timaru, New Zealand in October this year. The team selected to represent Australia is a very strong team. Four players from NSW were selected, Sarah Nelson, Craig Brann, Jeff Bond and Peter Bastow. I’m sure I speak for you in wishing them well but also the rest of the Team being managed by Garry Irwin. If you are thinking of attending and playing NZ Masters Championships at the same time and would like further information, please contact myself or Garry Irwin.
We look forward to seeing you with our next tournaments at Bega 4 - 5 May, Thornleigh 25 - 26 May, State Championships 22 - 23 June and Nowra Bomaderry 27 - 28 July. Your hosts appreciate your attendance.

Yours in Squash

thank you

Robert Scott
